Tea options

Experienced tea drinkers will love comparing the subtle nuances of our Single Origin Matcha Leaf. Each of these cultivars is a distinctive manifestation of its region’s terroir and showcases a unique meeting of profile notes. Our Single Origin teas are rare and offered for only a limited time, making them coveted gift options for your favorite tea-lover. (See a comparison of our current cultivar offerings below.)

Each individual Single Origin Matcha Leaf comes in a 20-gram (0.71-ounce) canister. The entire contents of a canister can be stored in the Cuzen hopper, where leaves will stay fresh for about a month in a dry environment and a bit less in a humid environment. For a special gifting option, we offer a Single Origin Box Set, which includes one canister each of Tenryu Goko, Toyota Komakage and Kirishima Okumidori. The Box Set is packed into an elegant kiri bako, a nail-free box made from paulownia wood. See more details about kiri bako below.

  • Tenryu, Goko

    Umami-forward, ripe mango, visceral

The goko tea cultivar, with its full-bodied flavor and fragrance, is an esteemed choice for gyokuro and matcha. Grown on high-altitude farms nestled in the steep Tenryu River Valley, goko’s limited exposure to sunlight results in savory-rich notes and aroma, laced with hints of tropical fruit and a sweet umami finish.

  • Toyota, Komakage

    Subtly sweet, light-bodied, jasmine

The komakage tea cultivar is known for its resilience to the cold, allowing it to flourish in the cool, pest-free climate of Aichi Prefecture’s mountainous region of Toyota. The terroir yields a tea with a crisp yet gentle palate, an enhanced aroma and a subtle florality.

  • Kirishima, Asanoka

    Refreshing, light-bodied, floral

Asanoka tea leaves favor the abundant sunlight of Kirishima’s mountainous region and teem with amino acids responsible for refreshing, umami notes. The tea’s bright acidity can be likened to tart cherries, but the sharpness is balanced with a light-bodied mouthfeel.

  • Kirishima, Tsuyuhikari

    Refined, nutty, mellow

Tsuyuhikari is rare outside of Kirishima and has refined, sweet umami notes marked with nutty flavors. A sip of this tea begins with a toasted rice fragrance, followed by mild astringency that lingers on the palate and invites another sip.

  • Kirishima, Okumidori

    Sweet, umami-laden, vibrant

Okumidori tea leaves are known for their vibrant emerald green hue and umami-laden flavor. Kirishima’s climate and volcano-fed soil are infused in this cultivar, resulting in a creamy sweetness reminiscent of fudge and a deep, vegetal aroma.

  • Tenryu, Okumidori

    Sweet, mellow, toasted fragrance

A sophisticated tea from high-altitude farmland. Negative ions from river fog and surrounding swamp areas allow plants to grow quickly, despite the shortage of sun exposure. The soil is full of stones, but nutrient-rich, making it fertile for cultivation. A sip of this tea begins with a toasted rice fragrance, followed by the crisp, clean notes of cool mountain fog.

  • Uji, Okumidori

Roasted fragrance, long and slightly bitter finish

In a beautiful, mineral-rich basin surrounded by mountains, there is a centuries-old tradition of tea-growing and processing. This Okumidori comes from an Uji style of roasting tea leaves and is fragrant with a long finish and a hint of bitterness.

Where our teas are grown

  • 1. Uji, the birthplace of matcha, boasts several hundred years of tea culture, which first began flourishing in the Muromachi era. Matcha grown in Uji is known for its signature aroma.

  • 2. In the Aichi Prefecture, a rich tradition of tea cultivation thrives in the mountainous regions of Toyota, where a cool climate keeps away pests, aiding in organic green tea cultivation.

  • 3. Shizuoka is one of the most popular tea areas in Japan, producing roughly half of Japan's tea, primarily on small farms. Tenryu farms are typically high-altitude, and cultivated on steep forest and river valleys. The tea produced here has refreshing, clean notes.

  • 4. Kirishima is where we source most of our Cuzen Matcha Leaves. The region is an up-and-coming area for matcha, specializing in organic farming methods, which are supported by plentiful rainfall and rich soil.

Kiri bako

Kiri bako is traditionally-designed, durable and known for keeping out moisture and pests, making it popular for food storage or keepsakes. The Box Set comes in a beautiful kiri bako that can be repurposed for centerpieces, eating utensils, pencils or other items. It is also food safe and pest resistant.

  • Single Origin Matcha Box Set: 3 Single Origin canisters displayed in front of the kiri bako.
  • The kiri bako displayed as a container for cutlery, as an exhibit of one of its many possible uses.
  • Certified organic

Only a small percentage of Japanese tea farms are fully organic. We make sure to source our shade-grown, whole matcha leaves from organic farmers, because we know that when you drink matcha, you are consuming the entire leaf.

  • A saucerful of bright and deep green matcha leaves, with a bamboo scoop resting on top.

Made for the Cuzen Matcha Maker

The size, shape and fully-roasted condition of our leaves are optimized to work with the compact ceramic mill inside our Cuzen Matcha Maker.

  • In a kitchen, a person pours a packet of Signature Matcha Leaf into the Matcha Maker’s hopper.

    Limited access

Typically, tea farmers only sell whole matcha leaves to tea companies, who in turn only offer pre-ground matcha to customers. We deliver our whole leaves directly to Cuzenists, in a state where oxidation is minimized, and health benefits can be optimized.

  • A bright green matcha latte in a white cup and saucer, next to a packet of Cuzen Latte Blend Matcha Leaf.

A quality, fresh cup at home

Convenient, delicious and easy on the wallet, our matcha costs about one dollar per shot, so the initial investment is covered very quickly.

  • A close photo of the dark, rich soil between two rows of tea plants.

    A nurturing practice

We’re proud to work with farming partners who use only natural pest deterrents and organic fertilizers. They not only yield a more nutritious and flavorful leaf, they also take care of our shared planet.
